The Human need for Connection
More of us are having to adjust to a new way of living and working, facing new challenges every day.
For many of us, our twice weekly trip to the gym or local yoga studio would have provided us with that much needed relief our bodies crave after a busy week at work, that social connection with colleagues at work and friends at the gym plays a huge part in our overall wellbeing that we perhaps hadn’t appreciated until now.
Today we find ourselves working from home, logging into online classes in the comfort of our living room. How brilliant that modern technology allows us this pleasure. We are so lucky to have so much amazing technology at our fingertips.
For many however, there’s still something missing, that human need for social connection and the healing power of touch.
This is largely down to a chemical called Oxytocin, sometimes named by scientists as the ‘cuddle hormone’. Levels of oxytocin rise when we touch, hug or sit close to someone else so we associate oxytocin with happiness and a reduction in the stress hormone norepinephrine.
Feeling disconnected from the outside world can lead to feelings of loneliness and challenges our mental health. If we neglect our need to connect we put our health at great risk.
Maintaining connection can help us to regulate our emotions, leading to improved self esteem, lower levels of depression, anxiety and can actually improve our immune system.
Complementary therapies prove to be a wonderful way to achieve and maintain this connection and are particularly helpful for the elderly or those living and working alone.
